Goblet-kantharos

Attica, Greece, 2nd quarter of 4th century BCE

Site: Panticapaeum (Kerch)

Ceramic clay. Black glazed goblet-kantharos in the form of a low bowl with a high everted neck and handles extending above the rim. At the bottom of the bowl inside, stamped decoration of a small circle enclosed by four palmettes with arching volutes and a broad band of rouletting made with a tracing wheel.

This transitional group of vessels dating from the second quarter of the fourth century can be referred to as goblet-kantharoi. This type is often considered the standard, and over time other variations developed from it. Complex engraved or stamped ornamentation became simpler, almost completely disappearing, as the overly structured surface reduced the amount of area suitable for painted decorations.
